The PDA gets in on the ringtone action

A technology called MobileSynth (licensed by Wave Arts) will be used in PDAs like Palm Pilots to enable them to play ringtones. As PDAs come closer to phones and vice-versa, the move only seems natural.

"We created MobileSynth to get the most audio quality possible out of the modest processors used in today's cell phones and PDAs," said Dr. Bill Gardner, president of Wave Arts. "As a Palm devotee, I'm very proud that PalmSource has chosen MobileSynth to be the audio synthesis engine in future Palm OS products."

The release also discusses ringtone formats and the upcoming 3G standards, in the effort to move away from MP3 and Microsoft's WMA formats.
