BlueFrog releases "Own Tones"

BlueFrog mobile has announced a patent-pending technology called "Own Tones". It allows users to call a phone number, record anything they want, and have it sent to their cell phone.

"Whether it's your pet barking or meowing, your children singing their favorite song, or a special message from a loved one, you can create your own customized ringtone. Here is how the system works. You simply call 206-678-RING (7464), record a message, and send it to your cell phone. It is fast and easy to do, the only requirement is that your phone must be capable of playing voice tones. Right now, Cingular/ATT Wireless and T-Mobile customers can use the system, and more carriers will be added soon."

A few obvious thoughts come to mind immediately. For example, is this service needed? Many recent phones come with a voice-memo capability that allows users to do this right on their cell phone.

More importantly, this service will likely be misused with users just playing their favorite music and recording that instead of their voice. This could spell big legal problems for BlueFrog, especially as MasterTones (real music recordings as ringtones) gain momentum.
